Reputation management
means influencing what people think, write, produce and say about you. It is
firstly about influencing how they think, but also about influencing how quiet they
are about you. For example, a company often calls in a reputation management
company when its customers are not just thinking bad things, but saying,
producing and writing negative things too. Blogging is a form of communication,
and so is ideal for reputation management.
A blog is a tool that may be used as a reputation
management tool
That is how you need to
think of it, as a tool. If you think of it as a tool, then you will be less
likely to fall into the trap of trying to promote yourself with it, and trying
to market with it.
You are trying to implant
an idea into a person’s mind, and ideally you want to either influence them
into taking action (difficult) or into not taking action (easy). If you want to
influence people into taking action such as buying or writing positive things
about you, then you need to know what your audiences’ wants, needs, desires and
motivations are and then manipulate them into getting what you want.

How do you get them to not take action on something?
This is a secret that is
so great that people don’t believe it. Only people in positions of influence
know this, and they have written books about it, and yet people still don’t
believe it. So, here it is:
If you don’t want people to do something then make
them think it has already been done.
Give yourself a moment to
pick yourself up off the ground for that little revelation. Let’s say For
example, that you support the democrats. If the republicans do not want you to
go out and start campaigning for the democrats, then they will release press
releases about how you are ahead in the polls.
This may make the
republicans look bad, but it gets all of their supporters out campaigning,
whilst keeping all of the democrat supports at home. Clever isn’t it, and that
is all you need to do if you do not want people to do something. Simply tell
them on your blog that the action they are going to take is already done.
A blog may purposefully create a positive or negative
reputation for itself
The blog itself is
capable of getting its own reputation. Some of them pick up reputations by
accident, such as game review blogs that people think are always going to say
negative things because they have lots of negative posts. Others try to create
a negative reputation for themselves in order to get a little publicity.
A blogs reputation may reflect upon the blogger
It is very important to
note, that if you work in a creative setting that you are not your work.
However, even with that said, it is possible for a blog to give the blogger a
bad name (bad reputation). This is especially true if the blog is in the name
of the blogger.
Your comment section does not represent your
reputation
If this one could be written in ten foot letters in front of your PC screen, then it really should be. Your commenters are a tiny minority of your traffic. People think that attracting comments is cool, but comments are not what people think they are. People who comment are very diverse, but all have something in common. The thing they have in common is time to write comments.

Your true user base is
probably not going to have time to read your blog and write a comment every
time. In fact, many of your readers will be silent for the entire time they follow
you. You really need to remember this, especially if you are being influenced
by the things that people write on your blog comment section.
Pay attention to your regular attendance
These are the people that
your blog is influencing. If it is influencing them to come back week after
week, then you are winning. It means that your blog is actually a reputation
management tool because without any viewers it is just a big pile of words on a
website.
Do not be overly concerned with spike and troughs in
attendance
Every now and again you
are going to have lots of people visit one week, and few people visit another.
This is normal for online blogs. If attendance drops and stays that way, then
that is when you should be concerned.
If you are using your blog
as a reputation management tool, then think about your attendance and what your
blog posts are doing to it. Your attendance may be dropping off because you are
being overly promotional, and it may be increasing because people agree with
what you are posting (a good thing perhaps?).
